Emotional Freedom Technique for new mums (EFT/tapping)
Amazingly, by tapping your fingertips on specific points on the face and body, you can clear emotions from the body’s energy system that are causing you distress.
We use this technique in my clinic a lot – it is particularly helpful in helping you move forward, alleviating anxiety and easing physical pain.
If you’re not familiar with the technique, I have outlined the process below so you can give it a go.
Take a moment to become aware of any feelings causing you distress (the problem). As you karate chop the fleshy parts on the outside of your palms together (see the picture below), say three times ‘Even though I (have this problem), I deeply and completely love and accept myself’. For eg ‘Even though I feel exhausted, I deeply and completely love and accept myself’
Now using the fingertips of both hands, tap the points illustrated in the picture below about 7 times each, starting with tapping both points between the eyebrows and finish by tapping the head. Once you’ve finished tapping, take your awareness back to the problem. The intensity of your distress should have decreased or released completely, having cleared the body’s energy.
Now it’s time to install a more positive feeling. Take a moment to compose a positive phrase to help you feel better. For eg ‘I am feeling more energised as I devote time to myself’. Now repeat the phrase 3 times while you karate chop fleshy parts on the outside of your palms together. Now repeat the tapping sequence you completed before.
You can give this a try anytime you feel like you need a little support to get through something.
We can also use pre-written EFT sequences with phrases to say while you’re tapping to help you heal.
Here is one I designed especially for new mums recently.
EFT for new mums
1. While you karate chop the fleshy parts of your palms together (see the picture below), say:
“Even though I find being a mum so challenging, I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway”
“Even though I often worry I’m not doing a great job, I deeply love and accept all parts of myself”
“Even though I never realised being a mum would be so hard, I deeply love and accept myself and my baby”
2. Now with the fingertips of both hands we start tapping the points of the face and body in the picture below about 7 times while we say the following phrases:
Eyebrow: “I’m so exhausted”
Side of Eyes: “I’m confused about what my baby needs”
Under Eyes: “I feel overwhelmed by responsibility and the amount of work there is to do”
Under Nose: “I’m not sure I’m doing a very good job of being a mum”
Chin: “My body feels stretched, tired, sore, out-of-shape and I don’t feel beautiful”
Collarbones: “I sometimes feel like I’m on my own with no-one to support me”
Under Arms: “I resent my lack of freedom”
Top of Head: “I feel isolated and I’m not sure who I am anymore”
3. Now it’s time to instill some positive messages into our bodies – thank goodness for that! So in the same way, with the fingertips of both hands we start tapping the points of the face and body in the picture below about 7 times while we say the following phrases:
Eyebrows: “I breathe in vibrancy and I rest deeply to restore my energy”
Side of Eyes: “I am clear about my baby’s needs as we are in-tune with each other”
Under Eyes: “I focus on the present moment and take only 1 step at a time”
Under Nose: “I am doing my best for my baby and my baby needs me, not perfection”
Chin: “I love and appreciate my beautiful body”
Collarbones: “I draw strength and support from myself, those around me and the universe”
Under Arms: “I embrace my changing role and I know I will have more freedom soon”
Top of Head: “I am not alone, I am loved, my needs are important and I am still me”
Take a deep breath.
How do you feel?– I’d love you let me know how you found it.
Happy tapping
